Your piece of the city to wear close to your heart! Church Square, the centre of the city, was originally called Marktplein (market square). Commandant-general MW Pretorius had the square laid out for a church and market purposes. The work was done by William Skinner and the Devereux brothers. The first church on the square was consecrated in 1857. In 1906 the church was demolished by the original contractor, apparently because it was dilapidated. Dr Frans Vrederijk Engelenburg, a local journalist, and the architect J de Zwaan were instrumental in having the square laid out by promoting the scheme in the local newspaper.
The design of the square was selected by means of a competition in 1912 – the winning entry was submitted by the well-known local architect VS Reese-Poole. He had based the design on that of Trafalgar Square in London. The Square forms the centre of the so-called cardo decumanus, a Roman urban planning principle around two axes. A statue of Pres. Paul Kruger (10 October 1825 – 14 July 1904) in his characteristic formal dress stands in Church Square, Pretoria. Today, Stanza Bopape and WF Nkomo Streets flank out from either side. Stanza Bopape was an anti-apartheid acitivist from Mamelodi.
